I’m Baaaaack…

Feels like it’s been a long time since I’ve been online – I’ve been totally in “move mode” for the last two+ weeks. Unlike our other moves, this one wasn’t bankrolled by the hubby’s company… so, while we hired a moving company to do the actual moving, we did our own packing. It turned out to be a pretty grueling process: at the end of the day, I just didn’t feel like doing anything more than putting my feet up and quaffing a brew.

I’ve seen professional packing crews in action, so I knew exactly what to do. And my guesstimate on the number of boxes and other supplies to get was pretty good. Nonetheless, the process is harder than the pros make it look! Part of the difficulty was due to the (added) sorting process: professional packers basically box up anything that isn’t nailed down; whereas we made multiple runs to the landfill, public library and/or Value Village (I didn’t want to pack anything that we didn’t want).

The other contributor to the enhanced difficulty was the cleaning… Pro packers don’t care if the books are dusty, or if there are pens and loose change hiding under the sofa cushions. I do. I’m no neat-freak, but I wasn’t inclined to pack any detritus along for the ride. And it’s simply amazing how much crud can hide undisturbed in a seemingly tidy household. In addition, I wanted to minimize the amount of post-move cleaning we had to do, so I gritted my teeth and did a lot of the “hands-and-knees” stuff beforehand.

Ugh.

Needless to state, I’m delighted that the worst is over. The old house been cleaned and vacated; while the new one is fairly functional. There’s still some unpacking to do – but the remaining boxes are pretty low priority (and mostly lodged downstairs in the family room and garage, where I don’t have to look at them, lol).

We’ve also got our gym memberships in hand – we have “all club” memberships at Oz Fitness, which means we can work out at any club in the chain. I’m looking forward to working out in a new facility, and Oz seems to be pretty well equipped. We’ll probably go for our first workout tomorrow. It’ll be a fairly light one, though: my training partner (my 22-yr. old son, Ryan) and I have been out of the gym since the 15th – so minimizing DOMS is a top priority (I already hab da sniffoos – my first cold since Fall, 2010 – so I’m not interested in significantly adding to my physical discomfort).

At any rate, back to work (that is, the writing, etc.) tomorrow!

  1. Packing stuff to move is one of the worst jobs ever! It sounds like you did it the right way. Clean it now and don’t worry about it later.

Hope everything goes good for the move. Also good luck with the new Gym.

  3. The nice thing about it, is that “home” is starting to feel like home. And it’s a purdy place, too. We’re up in the hills on the SW outskirts of town, and it’s very green… lots of evergreen trees and urban wildlife (I even saw two wild turkeys ambling around the neighborhood this morning). I like this place!

  4. Sounds like a great place to live. We have 25 acres and live in a farming area. We have a woods and are always seeing deer and turkeys and other wildlife.

My wife loves to watch birds also. We have feeders and birds everywhere.

It really puts me in a relaxed mood when I can look at nature everywhere from my deck!
