Does Your Store Provide Nu-Val Scores?
It’s no secret that many people ignore, or are confused by, nutritional labeling. And the confusion intensifies when various front-of-package claims are added to the mix. Unless you know a thing or two about nutrition, it’s not always easy to make the best choices.
Needless to state, industry initiatives like “Smart Choices” and “Nutrition Keys” have been pathetic, at best. So a cohort of nutritional and medical experts, led by Dr. David Katz of the Yale University School of Medicine came up with their own system: Nu-Val.

Overall, it looks like a pretty good effort… and it doesn’t get any simpler than a single number.
The Nu-Val system is currently being used in 14 supermarket chains and covers 90,000+ foods/products. If it’s not being used by any of the stores in your vicinity, you can suggest a store or download a request form you can print and send to the manager of your favorite market.

They use it here in Michigan at our local Meijer stores. It is a simple rating system, which should help people choose better products.
