Darden Restaurants to Offer Lower Cal Kids’ Fare
Darden Restaurants, Inc. – which owns the popular chain restaurants Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze – has announced its intention to make “at least one” sub-600 calorie option available on its children’s menus.
Assuming the new kids’ meals are tasty and kid-friendly, it’s a small step in the right direction. At the very least, it provides parents with a choice. According to the company press release, Darden restaurants will also make fruits or vegetables the default side dish option; and low fat milk the default beverage option.
Darden also committed to “reducing its overall calorie footprint,” as well as the amount of sodium used in its restaurants’ dishes.
