Acai Berries Back in the News
And not in a good way… The LA Times explains: The Federal Trade Commission has filed suit against 10 companies the agency says are using fake news websites to market acai berry weight-loss products. The FTC said the defendants operate websites that seem like legitimate newsgathering sites but actually promote deceptive advertisements urging consumers to buy acai berry products. The sites use names and logos of major media...
Exercise and Weight Loss
By now, I’m sure you’ve seen (or heard) media reports that exercise – in and of itself – isn’t a major contributor to weight loss (click here for an example). While I’d dispute that (at least for those looking to optimize their body comps), it’s probably true that exercise alone isn’t enough for your average person who’s interested in losing his/her surplus flab. At least from a...
Survey: Many Young Women Would Trade Years of Life to Be Thin
This is sad. Almost one-third of young women would trade at least a year of their lives to have a perfect body, according to a new survey of British undergraduates. The survey found that 16 percent of young women queried said they’d trade a year of life for their ideal body weight and shape. Ten percent were willing to trade two to five years, and 2 percent were willing to trade up to 10 years of life away. One percent said they...
Prions Found in HCG

That part, at least, was pretty cool....
The Healthy Skeptic on Sensa
In case you don’t know what Sensa is, I’ll let Paul explain: Sensa Tastants—”sprinkles” as they are also referred to on the TrySensa.com web site—are a product you “sprinkle” on your meals to increase satiety (the feeling of “fullness”) and decrease appetite. They work, apparently, by using… “…your senses of smell and taste as allies in weight loss. Sprinkling Tastants...
CHMP on “The Biggest Loser”
I loved this 6-part series on “The Biggest Loser” by Tristin Aaron of the Center for Health Media and Policy Center at Hunter College. She gets right at what irritates me the most about this exploitative bit of “fitness porn.” Over the season, the show sometimes depicts the dieters sympathetically. They have to. It’s essential that viewers invest in the “characters” and the competition between them. But the...
