Disney To Phase out Unhealthy Food Ads
When my kids were growing up, we always chose The Most Basic of all basic cable TV packages offered, so we never got the Disney channel… thus I cannot tell you what the food ads were like. I can imagine it, though, so the news that Disney plans to phase out ads for junk food seems pretty major to me. According to USA Today… The Walt Disney Co. is announcing today that it plans to advertise only healthier foods to kids on...
Fererro USA Settles Nutella Lawsuits
Here’s ABC News’ report: No surprises here… as I noted last year: When I was asked about Nutella on the “Bodybuilding Revealed” forum some years ago, I referred to it as “greasy sugar spread,” which is basically what it is. The primary ingredients are sugar and palm oil… the “nut” part runs a very distant third. The Nutella web site claims there are “over 50 hazelnuts per 13 oz. jar.” According to NutritionData.com,...
NPR: “Time for a ‘Bug Mac’?”
NPR has an interesting story about Dutch research on protein. Specifically, bug protein. Ph.D. student Dennis Oonincx is checking out his mealworms living in the cricket lab, and says his research into how the worms metabolize a waste product shows how superior insects are as a protein source — better than cattle or sheep. “You can produce more food for people with less input,” he says. “It’s good food and...
What Dr. Freedhoff Sez…
…About this new ad from the vegan group, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Dr. Freedhoff is NOT amused… The message I get from it is along the lines of obese people are oafish, clumsy, thoughtless, boobs, and that “fat” is “sickening“. Shame on you PCRM, both for your misinformation on veganism and obesity, as well as for your perpetuation of hateful weight bias, but thank you...
No “Pink Slime” for Me!
I’ve been busy organizing, cleaning and packing in preparation for the big move, but I haven’t been completely oblivious to the news… like the recent ABC News report on “pink slime.” According to ABC journalist Jim Avila, “lean, finely textured beef” (aka “pink slime”) is a commonly used filler added to commercial ground beef. The catch is, because it’s “beef,”...
CDC Report: 16% of Kids’ Daily Diet Consists of Added Sugars
The title pretty much speaks for itself. Boys consumed an average of 362 calories/day from added sugars; girls consumed 282 calories. The report is here. CNN’s synopsis is here. FWIW, I imagine the numbers for total sugar in the diet could even be higher than this – the CDC report is concerned only with added sugars, and does not include naturally-occurring sugars (such as the sugars in milk and fruit). Even one glass of...
