Karma Files: Dr. Oz Gets B*tch Slapped by Senator Claire McCaskill
We’ve been reviewing Dr. Oz featured weight loss products for several years now, for the simple reason that anything Oz features on his show generates a ton of interest, and accordingly, a ton of sales. But we’re not pleased with him for the simple reason that the things he recommends… well, they either have been proven not to work, or the science is preliminary, the results are exaggerated, there are conflicts of...
Cyclospora Outbreak Caused by Fecal Contamination
I’ve been idly following the news of the Cyclospora outbreak for the last few days… according to the latest report, there are 425 reported cases across 16 states (I don’t live in any of them, knock on wood!). It appears that salad mix produced by Taylor Farms de Mexico and served in Darden-owned chain restaurants (Olive Garden, Red Lobster) was ID’d as the primary source in Iowa and Nebraska, two of the states...
“The Worst Restaurant Meal in America”
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says it’s Long John Silver’s “Big Catch.” “Laboratory tests released today by the Center for Science in the Public Interest show that Long John Silver’s Big Catch meal, when comprised of fried fish, Hushpuppies, and Onion Rings, has an astonishing 33 grams of trans fat—the most powerful promoter of heart disease in the food supply. On top of that,...
Life’s Too Short to be a “Midiot”
Not being a New Yorker, I’ve had to watch “Cronut mania” from afar. And after watching for the last week or so, I still don’t get it. Jay Leno pretty much summed it up with this (rather lame) joke: I’m not a Leno fan, but “midiots” seems about right. “Cronuts” are the brain child of New York City pastry chef Dominique Ansel. As Leno says, it’s a cross between a doughnut and a...
“Creative and Wacky?” More Like “Disgusting”
I like lasagna. I also like burgers. But the thought of eating a “lasagna bun burger” damn near makes me want to hurl. What is a “lasagna bun burger”? It’s a meatball-like patty, slorped in marinara sauce and melted cheese, and encased between two slabs of breaded, deep-fried lasagna. Oh… and it’s served with fries, of course. Nothing like a greasy, fatty side dish for a greasy, fatty entree!...
Looks Like the “99 Cent Store Diet” is a Winner
I really enjoyed this story… Last week, ABC News covered the weight loss saga of “Papa Joe” Aviance, a Southern California recording artist and producer, who lost a whopping 250 pounds over an 18 month period. And he did it on a budget. He shopped for healthy foods at a “99 Cents Only Store” and walked 5 miles/day. Joe Aviance is living proof that you don’t need to spend big bucks to get into shape....
