Melatonin

Also known as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine.  A hormone produced by the pineal gland.  Melatonin is best known for its role in regulating sleep and circadian rhythms. Melatonin also acts as an antioxidant, and—interestingly enough—may increase the exercise-induced production of growth hormone when taken in supplemental form.

Also called “potency wood”. An herbal preparation from Ptychopetalum olacoides Bentham – a South American tree. Bark/root extracts are often included in various male enhancement supplements for their reputed aphrodisiac effects. Animal experiments suggest it may have antidepressant and antioxidant activities.

L-Carnitine Fumarate

A carnitine salt that’s a delivery form of l-carnitine. Fumaric acid is a Krebs Cycle intermediate and food additive.  L-Carnitine Fumarate is promoted in some ads as THE most bioavailable form of l-carnitine, but a 2005 study on piglets demonstrated that the bioavailability of the most common carnitine salts was about the same.

A carnitine salt that’s a common delivery form of supplemental l-carnitine.  Tartaric acid is a naturally-occurring organic acid found in wine and a variety of plant foods.
