Melatonin
Also known as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine. A hormone produced by the pineal gland. Melatonin is best known for its role in regulating sleep and circadian rhythms. Melatonin also acts as an antioxidant, and—interestingly enough—may increase the exercise-induced production of growth hormone when taken in supplemental form.
See “Melatonin Information and Side Effects” for more information.
Muira Puama
Also called “potency wood”. An herbal preparation from Ptychopetalum olacoides Bentham – a South American tree. Bark/root extracts are often included in various male enhancement supplements for their reputed aphrodisiac effects. Animal experiments suggest it may have antidepressant and antioxidant activities.
L-Carnitine Fumarate
A carnitine salt that’s a delivery form of l-carnitine. Fumaric acid is a Krebs Cycle intermediate and food additive. L-Carnitine Fumarate is promoted in some ads as THE most bioavailable form of l-carnitine, but a 2005 study on piglets demonstrated that the bioavailability of the most common carnitine salts was about the same.
L-Carnitine-L-Tartrate
A carnitine salt that’s a common delivery form of supplemental l-carnitine. Tartaric acid is a naturally-occurring organic acid found in wine and a variety of plant foods.
