Vitamins, Minerals, and their importance in Winter
Ensuring your body gets an adequate supply of the proper
vitamins and minerals is important at the best of times
(whether you're intent on losing weight or not). But for
those of us in the Northern Hemisphere who are starting to
get a taste of winter, it's perhaps even more critical. For
instance...
Fruits and vegetables have to be imported, and must be
picked in an unripe state. Local vegetables have to be
grown hydroponically, and don't offer the flavor, appeal and
nutritional value of fresh-picked, sun-ripened fare.
Cold and flu season is at its pinnacle, and it's a good idea,
for obvious reasons, to have your body operating in peak
condition to fight off the infections you just know you're
going to be exposed to.
Of course, there are other issues as well...
Our best source of vitamin D, which most people don't get
enough of at the best of times, is the sun. In the winter
months, there's a lot less sunlight than usual, and most of
us aren't basking in what little of it there is. A
deficiency of vitamin D can cause aching muscles, bone pain,
worsen osteoporosis, and increase the risk of bone fracture.
The best solution, of course, is to eat plenty of nutritious
foods, and supplement with a high-quality vitamin
formulation. I say "high quality" because most
"off-the-shelf" store brand vitamins are anything but.
Formulated under high pressure with low quality ingredients,
these products aren't really worth buying. The only vitamins
