Fall is Here... Get Active!
Well, for those of use here in the nothern hemisphere, fall is on the
way, and the days are getting both colder and shorter! (if you happen to
be one of the lucky ones who experiences warm weather all year 'round, or
you're heading into summer as opposed to winter... I'm envious!).
For
many of us, the coming of fall triggers a "hibernation effect" -- "I'm staying inside until it's warm, give me a call in April!"
Unfortunately, inactivity and weight gain go hand-in-hand. Hibernation,
as comforting as the thought may be, is not an acceptable option. In
order to keep the weight off, you have to stay active. Gym memberships, for
instance, tend to skyrocket in the fall for this very reason. If you
have the option to do so, I heartily recommend that you sign
up with a local gym or health club -- it's a great way to stay fit and
meet new friends over the colder months. Ask friends for personal recommendations,
or obtain a "guest pass" to evaluate the quality of the services provided
before commiting to a monthly contract at any gym.
If you can't access a gym, my #1 recommendation is that you begin incorporating
brisk, 20-30 minute walks into your weekly schedule -- 3 times per week at least.
In fact, walking is the cheapest, most enjoyable way to stay fit that I know of.
It's also invigorating and refreshing... what could be better?
So... if you happen to be one of the poor unfortunates like myself who happen
to be looking forward to another long, hard winter (groan), make the commitment
now to staying as active as possible. It'll make things so much easier once
bathing suit season rolls around again! |
